Victorian House Plans

Victorian house plans were designed and built in North America during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). The most renowned and recognizable house plan style in this period was the Queen Anne. The Queen Anne style of the Victorian house plan era was fashionable in the 1880's and 1890's. Most people relate Victorian floor plans to the painted ladies of San Francisco, or the Brooklyn Brownstones.

In the 1880's and 1890's, the industrial revolution was in full flight in North America. Excitement of the new technologies, and machinery, allowed factories to produce very detailed reproductions, of elaborate architectural details. Excitable homebuilders in this period used this large inventory of architectural parts to create Victorian homes that were sometimes viewed as excessive.

The flamboyant architecture of these decades took on many shapes.

Not all of the home plans were designed alike, and there always seemed to be an element of surprise when a new Victorian home rose out of the ground.

The Victorian home floor plans were thought to be feminine and romantic; however, they were a product of the most "un-romantic" period in our history (industrial machine age).

Victorian house plans often shared some common characteristics. An asymmetrical footprint, and steeply pitched roofs were among the most popular. These home plans used the gingerbread look, with spindles and lacy fretwork, along with adorned, gable roof ends. The alternative to this design was the bold look of half timbered gable ends, with substantial porch posts. Most frequently found in this era was pattered masonry, and interior walls made of stone and terra cotta. Interior design and decorating was as fanciful and bombastic as the detailed and colorful exteriors.

Victorian home floor plans are usually easy to spot; however, due to the wide variety of products used to create them, they are very difficult to categorize and define. Designers and Architects of home floor plans still flash back in time, to design and create homes from this period. These new Victorian homes may have all of the conveniences and amenities of modern home floor plans, but retain the warmth and character from our past.
